New Zealand cellco 2degrees is preparing to launch its 3G network next week, according to a report in the New Zealand Herald. The introduction of 3G will put 2degrees on a par with its more established rivals Telecom Mobile and Vodafone, both of whom have launched 3G services in recent years. 2degrees’ chief technology officer Mike Goss explained that the 3G network was built at the same time as its 2G network – which itself only went live in August 2009 – but the company has spent the subsequent year fine-tuning the 3G network and optimising its operation. While theoretical download speeds on the W-CDMA/HSPA-based network are 7.2Mbps, a typical customer experience will be around 1.5Mbps.
