Spanish cablecos join forces for mobile spectrum acquisition attempt

A quartet of Spanish cable operators have joined forces to participate in the country’s next round of spectrum refarming, Trading Markets reports. Regional cablecos Euskaltel, R, Telecable and Ono have called on the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce to allow them access to the 800MHz and 900MHz spectrum bands, as well as to frequencies in the 2100MHz and 2600MHz range, asking the ministry to ensure that appropriate conditions are established for spectrum access, so that they can provide both traditional voice services alongside mobile broadband products. The fixed line operators argue that new tenders for spectrum in the 800MHz and 2600MHz bands should enable the entrance of new players to the mobile market, a view echoed by the country’s competition watchdog, the Comision Nacional de Competencia (CNC), which has said that in the refarming process and mobile spectrum tender priority should be given to operators which do not currently own mobile frequencies.
