Tele2’s Dutch unit to launch LTE pilot

15 Jul 2010

Tele2 NL, formerly Versatel Telecom International, is planning the launch of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the Netherlands, Telecompaper reports. The virtual operator has reportedly built a trial mobile network in parts of Diemen and Amsterdam based on E-UTRA technology, enabling connection speeds of up to 100Mbps/50Mbps (download/upload). Tele2 received four licences in the 2.6GHz frequency auction of April 2010 and at the time said it was still evaluating whether or not to roll out alone or with a partner. It paid EUR400,000 (USD527,588) for 2×20MHz in the 2545MHz-2565MHz band paired with the 2665MHz-2685MHz band. Tele2’s existing MVNO service in the Netherlands had 383,000 customers at the end of March 2010.
