DoCoMo’s SIM-free phone offer sends share price soaring

6 Jul 2010

Shares for Japan’s leading mobile by subscribers NTT DoCoMo climbed sharply on the local bourse in the wake of a report in the Nikkei daily saying the operator will start including software next April that will allow mobile phone users to switch carrier without changing their handsets. The newspaper quotes DoCoMo president Ryuji Yamada as saying the software will unlock Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards and let customers keep their handsets when switching service provider by the simple act of replacing the SIM card. DoCoMo is understood to be banking on its claim of having ‘better-quality’ connections than its rivals, in the hope that by offering SIM-free phones it will entice users to switch from its rivals.
