UPC signs five-year ultra-high speed broadband deal with BT

Irish cableco UPC has signed a multimillion-euro five-year contract with BT to gain access to upgraded services through the latter’s new generation network. Six towns will be covered under the deal it said, with a ‘northern ring’ serving Sligo, Athlone and Mullingar, and a ‘southern ring’ covering Portlaoise, Carlow and Newbridge. Under the plan, UPC intends to launch a 100Mbps broadband service in the short term, with the head of BT Wholesale, Shay Walsh, saying that the tie-up will afford UPC a ‘key part of the necessary backing infrastructure’ to deliver that service, which is currently marketed as Etherflow.
