TeliaSonera Sweden has announced that it will launch mobile broadband services based on a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Visby, a popular summer holiday destination, on 30 June. The so-called ‘4G’ service promises practical data rates of up to 80Mbps to enhance high speed real-time services such as television, online and enterprise applications and other mobile services that require a fast internet connection with low response times. At launch, LTE wireless modem users will have 4G coverage in most of central Visby, with the operator and its equipment supplier Ericsson planning a gradual expansion across the surrounding area. TeliaSonera launched the world’s first commercial LTE services simultaneously in Stockholm and Oslo, Norway in December 2009, and is planning to cover 25 cities in Sweden with 4G services by the end of this year.
