MTel launches IPTV over cable

17 Jun 2010

Hungary’s dominant telecoms operator by revenues and subscribers Magyar Telekom (MTel) has launched an IPTV service over its cable access network using EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology, IPTV News reports. The launch, the first by a European operator, was carried out in partnership with Cisco Systems and Microsoft Hungary and will compliment its existing ADSL, VDSL and fibre-based TV services to boost network coverage to a potential 1.5 million households. Initially, the incumbent is focusing its cable-based IPTV deployment in Budapest and south-eastern Hungary, but the rest of the country is scheduled to follow at a later date.
