Elisa Eesti has given a demonstration of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) platform installed in Central Tallinn, achieving downlink speeds of almost 100Mbps. Elisa has carried out successful tests of the 4G network in cooperation with its supplier Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). Network Manager of Mobile and Fixed Networks at Elisa Eesti Andrus Kaarelson said that Elisa is testing the 4G network to prepare for the introduction of new technologies and services the moment they can be offered to clients as commercial services. As it stands, the Estonian government is planning to offer LTE licences later this year. Elisa plans to expand its 4G test network to the summer capital Parnu and the Kristiine district of Tallinn during the summer.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database Elisa is the first communications operator in Estonia to offer the triple-play bundle of landline telephony, wireless and internet services nationally. Its WiMAX network reaches 80% of the population with coverage of Tallinn, Tartu, Parnu, Maardu, Saku and part of Harju County. The company’s turnover in 2009 was EEK1.406 billion (USD110 million), while its operating profit amounted to EEK478 million.
