Telecom Cook Islands signs broadband contract with O3b

16 Jun 2010

Telecom Cook Islands has signed a long-term contract with O3b Networks to provide 155Mbps of bandwidth for internet connectivity via O3b’s yet-to-be-launched medium earth orbit satellites (MEOS). The service is due to be operational in mid 2012, after O3b delayed its original plan of launching its satellites by this year. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that O3b Networks (O3b standing for ‘Other three billion’) was launched in September 2008 with backing from the likes of Google, HSBC and Liberty Global, under a plan to launch MEOS serving developing nations.
