Bahraini wireless broadband operator Mena Telecom has contracted Motorola to expand the coverage and capacity of its WiMAX network, with the aim of handling 100,000 users simultaneously. Ameinfo.com writes that the move was taken as the internet provider noted a rise in its WiMAX subscriber base to 45,000 within 18 months of launching full commercial services. Mena expects its number of broadband customers to continue rising ‘significantly’ in the coming year. TeleGeography’s 4G Research Service notes that Mena Telecom’s 802.16e (mobile standard) nationwide WiMAX network was built by Motorola under an initial contract awarded in July 2007. Financial details were not released for either contract.
