11 Jun 2010

Japanese telecoms operator Softbank Corp has selected French-US equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its backbone network as part of its fixed and mobile convergence plans. Under the plan, Alca-Lu will deploy its scalable next generation optical networking solution, which supports speeds of up to 100Gbps to increase the telco’s performance and service speeds in the cities of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, where half of the Japanese population lives. The upgrade will improve capacity scalability and result in reduced operating costs and power consumption, it said. Softbank Telecom vice president Junichi Miyakawa said: ‘With Alcatel-Lucent’s solution, we are taking a major step towards providing a highly flexible, future-proof network, scaling up to 100G, to support current and future bandwidth demands with reduced time-to-market.’
