US aeronautical manufacturer Lockheed Martin has announced it has signed a contract with state-owned telecoms operator Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) for the construction and launch of Vietnam’s second telecoms satellite, VINASAT-2. Under the contract, Lockheed Martin will build the satellite and launch it into orbit in the second quarter of 2012. VNPT president Pham Long Tran said the VINASAT-2 project aims to develop the country’s telecoms market further by helping to meet the growing demand from customers and ensure safety and stability in the supply of services. VINASAT-2 will feature 24 Ku-band fixed high power communication channels, providing uplink and downlink coverage over Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos.

Lockheed Martin was also contracted for the delivery of Vietnam’s first satellite, the USD250 million VINASAT-1, which launched in April 2008. According to local press, VINASAT-1 has so far leased 80% of its capacity and is expected to operate at full capacity by 2011.
