10 May 2010

Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has awarded local telecoms operator GTel a licence allowing it to deploy a network for the provision of fixed telephony services, VietNamNet reports. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, GTel is owned by Vietnamese state-owned vehicles Global Telecommunications Corporation (51%) and GTEL TSC (9%), and Russian mobile group Vimpelcom (40%). It already provides wireless services in Vietnam, which were launched in July 2009 under the Beeline banner. GTel has become the eighth licensed fixed line operator in Vietnam, alongside state-owned incumbent Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), military-owned Viettel, electricity firm EVN Telecom, Saigon Post and Telecommunications (SPT), FPT Telecom, VNPT subsidiary VTC Group and IT company CMC.
