Megacable finalising MVNO agreement with Telefonica

7 May 2010

Mexico’s Megacable has confirmed that it aims to launch mobile voice services over Telefonica Moviles Mexico’s network by the end of September 2010, according to Reuters. Citing comments made by Megacable CEO Enrique Yamuni, the report suggested that the cableco will look to bundle the mobile voice services with its existing product range, which includes cable television, high speed internet and fixed line voice. It is understood that Megacable hopes to sign up some 100,000 mobile subscribers in the first year of its proposed mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) agreement with Telefonica, and commenting on the plans, Yamuni noted: ‘It is an additional option that we can offer the customer. It is not a business that will dramatically lift our cash flow or operating profit.’ The decision to not build out its own wireless infrastructure follows reports last month that Megacable withdrew from the country’s wireless spectrum auction, stating that having re-examined its options a move to launch its own mobile network would make little financial sense,
