Three bids to maintain Panama’s NP database

15 Apr 2010

Three companies have submitted bids to Panama’s telecoms regulator, Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Publicos (ASEP), with a view to administering the country’s number portability database. According to a statement by the regulator Spain’s El Corte Ingles topped the trio with a bid of PAB4.8 million (USD4.71 million), while Slovakian company Teletech and Netherlands-based Porting Access offered PAB2.76 million and PAB2.69 million respectively. ASEP administrator Dennis Moreno said that all three submissions will now be studied by an evaluation committee, with a decision expected to be made within 15 working days to decide on the winner. Portability for both fixed and mobile numbers is expected to be introduced in December 2010, and the country’s four mobile network operators – Telefonica Moviles Panama, Cable & Wireless Panama, Digicel Panama and Claro Panama – will all be required to adapt their networks to offer the service by that date.
