Vodafone to consult shareholders over Verizon Wireless

12 Apr 2010

UK newspaper The Sunday Telegraph reports that Vodafone is to consult its largest shareholders over what to do with the company’s 45% stake in US cellco Verizon Wireless. It expects to hold a series of discussions on the available options, including the possibility of merging with Verizon Wireless’ other parent Verizon Communications. The American telco is believed to prefer buying out Vodafone’s stake in the joint venture, despite the high price and resulting large tax bill. The newspaper claims that directors of rival international mobile phone companies believe a Vodafone-Verizon merger to be the most likely outcome.
