Softbank Corp has announced plans to increase its capital spending programme for fiscal 2010/11 by 54% to JPY400 billion (USD4.3 billion), and says it is targeting the development of its wireless arm, Softbank Mobile. The telco, which competes with NTT DoCoMo, KDDI Corp and eMobile in the domestic mobile market, plans to double its footprint of base stations to 120,000 in the year commencing 1 April to expand service coverage. Softbank Corp, headed up by its chief executive officer Masayoshi Son, is a key player in the fixed line telephony and broadband market segments, as well as Japan’s third largest cellco by subscribers. In recent years the group has committed around 80% of its total CAPEX to its burgeoning wireless business.
