Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited (Nepal Telecom, or NT) reported net profits of NPR10.18 billion (USD14.4 million) in its 2008/09 fiscal year, up 31% year-on-year, Republica reports. NT chairman Sushil Ghimire is quoted as saying that the telco’s earnings have more than doubled in the last four years. NT managed to increase its total income to NPR22.15 billion in fiscal year 2008/09, 25% more than the preceding fiscal year. The NT official went on to say that the company has expanded its PSTN network in all the 75 districts and is now putting emphasis on expanding services to around 199 Village Development Committees (VDCs) currently without telecommunication infrastructure. As at December/January (the end of its financial year), NT had 570,000 landlines in service and 3.558 million mobile customers. In addition, the company has been providing services like PSTN, GSM mobile service, CDMA, V-SAT and ADSL internet service among others. The telco plans to increase its total subscriber base to around seven million in its current fiscal year and to achieve this is deploying 2.2 million mobile connections, 450,000 CDMA lines, 56,000 PSTN lines and 29,000 ADSL connections.
