30 Mar 2010

Irish incumbent Eircom has launched a next generation broadband service in the Republic with prices for a capped 10GB download package starting at EUR24.99 (USD33.65) per month, Inside Ireland reports. In a move the telco says could improve the broadband experience for up to one million business and residential users, Eircom is upping its entry-level broadband service from 1Mbps to 8Mbps for those living in an NGN-enabled area. Customers on an existing 1Mbps, 3Mbps and 7Mbps service in these areas will be upgraded for free, as the programme is rolled out. Initially available in Dublin, the operator’s next generation broadband rollout programme will be expanded to major urban areas including Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford by the end of the year. Eircom has invested EUR1 billion over a three-year period in its infrastructure, including the construction of the next generation network (NGN). A 30GB download allowance will cost EUR29.99 while an unlimited download option is available at EUR39.82 per month.
