SCT reaffirms 10 April deadline for mobile registration

26 Mar 2010

The Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) has said that it will not extend the 10 April deadline for the registration of mobile subscribers, according to BNamericas. The clarification follows local news reports that suggested there had been requests by operators for an extension to the deadline, alongside claims that the congressional communications committee was preparing to push back the final registration date to 10 October. The SCT in mid-March announced that approximately 50% of mobile users had registered their details, leading both Radiomovil Dipsa (Telcel) and Telefonica Moviles Mexico (Movistar), the country’s two largest mobile operators by subscribers, to reportedly call for up to a year more to ensure that remaining half were registered. Under the new legislation, introduced in April 2009, those subscribers that fail to register by the deadline will have their service cut off.
