Telesp eyes MVNO entry via Vivo deal

25 Mar 2010

Brazilian fixed line operator Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo (Telesp), backed by Telefonica of Spain, is looking to enter the domestic MVNO market using Vivo’s network, subject to receiving the necessary regulatory approval. Local news service Agencia Estado quotes Telesp president Antonio Carlos Valente as saying that his firm plans to operate the new MVNO venture over Vivo’s mobile network. Vivo of course is itself a 50%-owned Telefonica venture, with equal partner Portugal Telecom.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Brazil’s telecoms watchdog Anatel may ratify the launch of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the country by July 2010. Anatel communications manager Nelson Takayanagi recently went on record as saying that the results of its public hearings on the matter found no obstacles to the MVNO launch scheme.
