Hungary’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers Pannon is to be renamed Telenor, local newswire MTI reports without citing its sources. Pannon, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telenor of Norway, was the first firm to offer GSM-based services in the country when it launch in 1994.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Hungary was home to 11.792 million mobile subscribers at the end of 2009, of which Pannon claimed 4.07 million (a market share of 34.5%), behind T-Mobile with 5.12 million (43.4%), but ahead of Vodafone Hungary’s total of 2.60 million (22.1%).
