Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has launched trials of femtocell technology aimed at improving the quality of wireless connectivity in homes and offices, reports ITP.net. The telco is conducting a limited trial in several business premises as well as private residencies using femtocells, which act as low power indoor wireless access points, directly connected to Qtel’s broadband network. The operator anticipates that the femtocell technology will improve both 3G mobile internet access within buildings and the quality of mobile voice calls, 60% of which are made indoors in Qatar, by providing enhanced signal strength.
