Telefonica mulling consortium bid for access to CFE fibre-optic strands

9 Mar 2010

Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica is considering a tie-up with a number of smaller Mexican telcos and cablecos with a view to bidding on access to the fibre-optic infrastructure being auctioned by the government on behalf of state power utility Comision Federal de Electridad (CFE), Reuters reports citing comments by a senior executive at Telefonica. CFE is auctioning off access to two unused portions of its fibre-optic network covering around 20,000km; the fibre strands will be divided into three geographic regions under the preliminary rules announced by the Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT). After executives at Megacable said last month that a joint bid with Telefonica could be on the cards, Francisco Gil, head of Telefonica in Mexico, said of the possible tie up: ‘We may go together…there could be a consortium.’
