A committee headed by Sam Pitroda, an advisor to the prime minister, has recommended that state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) retires or transfers 100,000 of its employees, and considers divesting 30% of the government’s ownership stake. ‘BSNL needs to improve organisation performance and employee productivity substantially. Retire or transfer around 100,000 employees through best possible processes such as voluntary retirement scheme (VRS),’ the committee proposed. The company currently has around 300,000 staff, making it one of the largest employers in India. The report notes that the privately-owned Bharti Airtel has only 25,000 employees.
