EC gives conditional green light to Orange UK/T-Mobile UK merger

2 Mar 2010

The European Commission (EC) yesterday confirmed recent speculation and gave conditional approval for the merger between the UK subsidiaries of France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom. Among the conditions for the deal is the stipulation that Orange UK and T-Mobile UK enter into a joint network sharing agreement with Hutchison 3G UK in order to ‘ensure there remains sufficient competitors in the market’, said the EC in a statement. The new enlarged company will also have to sell a quarter of its combined spectrum in the 1800MHz band. Consumer rights groups have hit out against the approval, saying it has been awarded too quickly and without the involvement of the UK regulator.
