ANCOM to allow 3G across 2G bands

24 Feb 2010

Romanian regulator the National Communications Authority (ANCOM) has announced that it has completed technical and administrative measures for a provision allowing cellular operators to deploy 3G services using the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands. The spectrum had previously been allocated for the exclusive provision of 2G GSM services. Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania and Cosmote will now all be able to improve their 3G coverage across the entirety of their current footprint. Catalin Marinescu, president of ANCOM, said: ‘This measure is part of the authority’s stated intention to promote broadband development in Romania. Along with the CDMA licence awards in 2008 and the forthcoming review of local loop unbundling, the liberalisation of spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands will contribute to the increased penetration of mobile internet access.’
