PTA considering spectrum fee increase for range of services

23 Feb 2010

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) plans to increase the licence fees for commercial radio-based services with a view to ensuring an efficient use of available spectrum, the Daily Times reports. The regulator has sought the views of industry players as it prepares to implement new spectrum charges for services including Land Mobile Wireless, Point-to-Point (P2P), Broadcasting, and aeronautical and maritime communications. At present there are approximately 769 licensees in these categories including 495 private licensees and 251 government licensees.

Under the proposals the PTA is considering an increase in annual spectrum charges after lapse of ten years in order to maintain the quality of services and manage the demand for frequencies amid increasing demand. A phased implementation plan is to introduce the new charges over a three-year period.
