Axtel to bid on own for wireless spectrum

17 Feb 2010

Mexican alternative operator Axtel has confirmed that it will participate in the country’s upcoming wireless spectrum auction without a partner, Bloomberg reports. Previously the telco’s chief financial officer, Felipe Canales, had said that Axtel had been considering a partnership with an ‘international player’.

In addition, Axtel rival Megacable has also revealed that it has registered to take part in the auction process, despite indications by its CEO Enrique Yamuni that it may not bid. It had been thought that Megacable and Cablevision or Cablemas were considering a joint bid, but this is no longer an option following the announcement earlier this week that Grupo Televisa, owner of the latter two, had agreed to acquire a 30% stake in digital trunking operator Nextel de Mexico.
