Iliad’s mobile unit selects NSN for core network

Free Mobile, the wireless arm of French group Iliad (Free) which recently won the country’s fourth and final 3G licence, says it has awarded Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) a contract to supply its core network equipment. Reuters quotes NSN chief executive officer Rajeev Suri as saying that a preliminary agreement has been signed and that a definitive deal is expected soon. Local press are estimating that the value of the deal could be in the region of EUR250 million (USD340 million), although no concrete financial figures have been disclosed. It is understood French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent is being considered for another part of the network rollout – albeit that its portion will constitute a much smaller contract.
