BT and O2 ink five-year managed services deal

2 Feb 2010

The UK’s fixed line incumbent BT has announced that it has signed a five-year managed services deal with the country’s largest mobile network operator by subscribers, and former subsidiary, O2 UK. Under the terms of the deal BT Wholesale will consolidate O2’s mobile and fixed core networks in the UK in to a single network utilising BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN) platform. At present BT already provides O2 a number of services such as core network management support for the cellco’s mobile customers, whilst it also supplies a managed network service that allows O2 to offer fixed line voice and high speed internet services. It is understood that the transition to a single network will allow O2 to reduce costs, while it will also enable it to expand and enhance the range and quality of the services it offers. Commenting on the deal, Nigel Purdy, head of networks at O2, said: ‘As we move to an all IP world and as data traffic volumes increase, the consolidation of our fixed and mobile core networks is a common sense approach that will help future-proof our business and provide the best possible service for our customers. BT Wholesale continues to impress O2 with its ability to deliver highly complex solutions. It is a trusted partner and we value its experience in managed services.’
