Japan’s largest mobile operator by subscribers and revenues NTT DoCoMo posted third-quarter net income of JPY134.6 billion (USD1.5 billion), up 48% from JPY91 billion a year ago. Profits for the three months to 31 December 2009 were bolstered by the absence of a one-off charge relating to asset write-downs and lower stock valuations last year, it said. In the wake of the announcement the cellco confirmed its full-year sales and profit targets remain unchanged. DoCoMo’s operating profit climbed 28% year-on-year to JPY217.4 billion, although quarterly revenues dipped 1.3% to JPY1.097 trillion. For the nine months ended 31 December 2009, DoCoMo’s operating revenues reached JPY3.242 trillion, down by JPY136.4 billion on a year earlier, and operating income fell JPY44.1 billion to JPY702.7 billion. Pre-tax profit was JPY701.7 billion and net income was JPY419.3 billion.
As at 31 December 2009 the cellco had a total of 55.44 million mobile subscribers, with net gains for the first nine months of the year reaching 1.28 million. Of the total, some 52.05 million, or 93.9% were on 3G FOMA contracts.
