KPN will not turn back on IPTV

27 Jan 2010

Dutch incumbent KPN has announced its continued backing for IPTV services, despite a less than overwhelming take-up to date, and says it needs TV-over-broadband to help it reach its wider fibre-optic (FTTx) targets. A report from Light Reading notes that KPN believes it has the capability to sell IPTV services to the general public, based on the success of its digital terrestrial TV service, Digitenne, which ended 2009 with about 880,000 customers. Although IPTV subscriber figures stand at a less impressive 90,000 (since it launched the service in 2006), taken together, KPN’s share of the overall Dutch TV market reached 13% at the year-end, and 23% of the digital TV market at the same date.
