MNP to be implemented this year

26 Jan 2010

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ali Abbasov has revealed that the government plans to introduce mobile number portability (MNP) later this year, reports. According to Abbasov, the relevant standardised documents have been drawn up and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers. However, he added that the country’s mobile operators have not yet reached agreement over the service, which remains a major hurdle to its implementation. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Azerbaijan is home to four wireless operators: market leader Azercell, which is wholly owned by Fintur Holdings (a joint venture between TeliaSonera and Turkcell) and had a market share of 54% at 30 September 2009; privately-owned Bakcell (23.8%); Azerfon (Nar Mobile, 21.3%); and the market’s sole CDMA operator Catel (0.7%).
