Mexican triple-play provider Cablevision, a unit of media giant Televisa, has announced plans to boost the download speeds available to its high speed internet customers, Reuters reports. Following the lead of the country’s market leader in the broadband sector, Telmex, Cablevision will increased downlink speeds to up to 10Mbps across Mexico City and the surrounding areas. Telmex revealed a similar upgrade last week, with the speed increases widely viewed as a means to stave off increased competition in the sector. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Cablevision was the fourth largest broadband operator by subscribers at end-September 2009 with 234,138 high speed internet customers. At that date Telmex, Megacable and Cablemas held first, second and third place respectively, with Telmex dominating the sector, holding an almost 70% market share.
