Saudi Telecom names Bahraini venture ‘Viva’; still no launch date

25 Jan 2010

Saudi Telecom Company (STC), which was awarded Bahrain’s third mobile network operating licence in January 2009, has named its Bahraini subsidiary ‘Viva’, the same branding as its mobile unit in Kuwait. Ibrahim bin Abdulrahman Al-Omar, the head of STC’s Bahrain operations, announced that the naming of the start-up company ‘will lead towards the final stages of operations as it sets its eyes towards launching soon,’ although a target launch date was not revealed. It had been expected that STC would launch commercial mobile services in the first quarter of this year, with a trial or soft launch rumoured to be planned by the end of January.
