UK and US VoIP provider Truphone has announced that it has inked a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) deal with British cellco Vodafone UK. Under the terms of the agreement between the two companies Truphone will gain access to Vodafone’s UK mobile network, allowing it to deliver voice and data services to its Truphone Local Anywhere subscribers. The MVNO’s service will offer a unique hook, allowing customers to pay local rates in countries where it has wholesale partnerships, while users will also be able to store multiple local mobile numbers for different countries on a single SIM. Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone said of the service: ‘Truphone Local Anywhere is a truly revolutionary service for people with an international lifestyle allowing them to ‘stay local’ as they travel around the world. We are delighted to announce this partnership with Vodafone which will give our customers access to a high quality network in the UK.’
Truphone has said that similar wholesale partnerships are being prepared for other key travel destinations around the world – such as Australia, Hong Kong and South Africa – in time for launch and rollout throughout 2010. Local Anywhere has also been launched in the US, but the operator has not revealed which mobile network operator it has partnered with to offer the service.
