China Mobile ended 2009 with 5.51 million TD-SCDMA users according to China Knowledge. China’s largest cellco had deployed 87,000 TD-SCDMA base stations by the end of the year and expects to roll out a further 70,000 this year. Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile, said his company would finish building its 3G network this year instead of in 2011 as originally planned. At the end of 2009 the cellco had invested RMB80 billion (USD 11.7 billion) in its 3G network, which is based on the home-grown TD-SCDMA standard. Indeed, China’s three main telecoms companies had invested RMB102.3 billion in 3G networks by the end of October, according to figures released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
