Telcos to reveal revised tariff structure by 21 March

13 Jan 2010

According to a report by Dow Jones Newswires, Taiwanese operators Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications and Vibo Telecom will all announce revisions to their respective internet and mobile tariffs by 21 March 2010, shortly before the National Communication Commission’s (NCC’s) imposed deadline of 1 April. As reported by CommsUpdate on 7 January, the NCC ordered telcos to reduce mobile tariffs by 5.87% from 1 April 2010, while ADSL services will be subject to a 5.68% reduction. The regulator, citing ITU figures, revealed that the country’s mobile charges as a percentage of per capita income rank as the 26th highest in the world, and are currently three times higher than Hong Kong. Should operators fail to implement the cuts by the deadline, they could find themselves subject to fines of between TWD300,000 (USD9,436) and TWD5 million.
