Clearwire begins commercial WiMAX operations in Spain

US-owned Clearwire has launched a mobile WiMAX service in Malaga, with the initial network rollout covering a metropolitan population of approximately 600,000, Light Reading reports. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in October 2009 Clearwire announced that it had selected Israel’s Alvarion and ZTE of China to supply the equipment needed for the rollout of commercial WiMAX services in Spain. The service, which will be marketed under the Instanet banner, will offer average download speeds of between 3Mbps and 6Mbps, with the monthly costs starting at EUR29.90 (USD42.85). For the launch in Malaga Alvarion has provided the necessary equipment, while ZTE will be responsible for the provision of hardware in Seville, where Clearwire also expects to launch services this year.
