Movilnet reaches 400 W-CDMA/HSPA base stations, aims for 582

Venezuelan state-owned cellco Movilnet has announced that it has reached a total of 400 operational W-CDMA/HSPA base stations throughout the country and aims to increase the number to 582 in the first half of this year. The 400th UMTS base station to be commissioned was in the town of Paramillo, Tachira State adding to existing coverage in cities such as Caracas, Maracay, Barquisimeto, San Cristobal, Puerto La Cruz, Porlamar, Puerto Ordaz, Maturin, Maracaibo and Valencia, providing 3G/3.5G services including high speed internet access. A company spokesperson said: ‘We hope to reach the 582 UMTS commercial service stations throughout Venezuela in the first half of 2010. We are working on developing applications and services to reach remote places and schools and provide inhabitants with more effective communications.’
