Lombard says no plans to buy big in 2010

7 Jan 2010

France Telecom (FT) chief executive Didier Lombard is quoted by the French newspaper Les Echos as saying he has no plans to acquire a major listed telecoms operator, and instead will focus on developing FT’s position in a number of emerging markets – such as in Africa and Vietnam. The CEO went on to acknowledge the importance of its exclusivity in selling the iPhone – FT’s year-end sales reportedly reached ‘historic’ levels, with the iPhone accounting for 77% of all handsets sold with a contract by Orange in the pre-Xmas run-up – although he disputed the claim that FT was ‘at the mercy of Apple’. Lombard went on to say that the operator’s plan to deploy its ultra high speed fibre-optic network in Paris and 45 provincial towns by the end of 2012, and more widely from end-2015, was on track.
