23 Dec 2009

Pakistani WiMAX provider Wateen Telecom has updated its agreement with vendor Motorola, and as part of its latest customer premises equipment (CPE) order, the telco has chosen Motorola’s WiMAX USBw 100, which will be made available to consumers and businesses for the first time in Pakistan, and the outdoor WiMAX CPEo 450, as well as the newly introduced WiMAX CPEi 775 and CPEi 750 for indoor use within a home or office environment. Tariq Malik, chief executive officer of Wateen Telecom, said of the deal: ‘We required leading WiMAX technology to provide first-class services and meet customer demand across an extended Pakistani network and after a competitive review selected Motorola to provide next-generation WiMAX CPE units. We are confident that the deployment of the CPE products will enhance Wateen’s position as a leading telecommunications provider.’

Wateen announced in September 2009 that it had reached the milestone of 100,000 customers, and its latest order comes as it reveals it is on target to double CPE volume to 200,000 by the end of 2009. The operator’s services are currently available in 22 cities across Pakistan.
