US hands out first grants under ARRA

18 Dec 2009

US vice president Joe Biden has announced that the government has begun to deliver the first round of grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The state expects to dispense a total of USD2 billion in grants and loans over the next 75 days, expanding broadband access, creating tens of thousands of jobs and stimulating the economy in the near term. The broadband initiative was launched by Biden in June 2009, aiming to release an eventual USD7.2 billion in funding to improve rural internet access. Biden said at the launch ceremony: ‘Getting broadband to every American is a priority for this administration.’
