Chunghwa hires Ericsson for LTE trial

18 Dec 2009

Taiwan’s leading operator by subscribers Chunghwa Telecom has announced that it has contracted Swedish vendor Ericsson to develop a trial Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network. Ericsson will provide core network infrastructure, base stations and network management systems for the 4G network, which will be rolled out and tested in northern Taiwan. The companies plan to complete the first phase of testing by mid-2010, using the data collected to inform the deployment of a nationwide network. As reported by CommsUpdate on 14 August 2009, Chunghwa hopes to launch LTE services in 2011 and is working with six firms – HTC, Asustek Computer, HT mMobile, Coiler, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Institute for Information Industry (III) – to develop LTE products in preparation for a commercial launch.
