NuevaTel to spend USD43 million on network upgrade, expansion

According to BNamericas, citing local press reports, Bolivian cellco NuevaTel is planning to invest around USD43 million in the upgrade of its network. It is understood that Finnish vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) will oversee the project, and commenting on the development NuevaTel noted: ‘The implementation of this new network will enable a faster connection for data services and will also result in the expansion of coverage to other municipalities across the country.’

NuevaTel, which launched its GSM network in November 2000, lies in third place in the Bolivian mobile market, trailing Entel Movil and Telecel (Tigo). According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, as at end-September 2009 it had an estimated 1.63 million subscribers, giving it a market share of 27.5%, while Entel and Telecel held 39.8% and 32.7% of the market respectively.
