T-Mobile, Huawei sign femtocell MoU with Ubiquisys

14 Dec 2009

UK-based femtocell company Ubiquisys has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with T-Mobile, the wireless arm of German telecoms operator Deutsche Telekom (DT), and Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to conduct femtocell Interoperability Testing (IOT) over the next six months. The tests will involve femtocells supplied by both Ubiquisys and Huawei, which will communicate using the Third Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP’s) new Iuh standardised open interface. They will be connected to a Huawei Femto Gateway on T-Mobile’s core network. ‘To reach their full market potential, femtocells must be more like mobile phones – interchangeable with the network they connect to,’ noted Will Franks, CTO of Ubiquisys, adding: ‘As a pioneer in this industry, we designed our femtocell from day one to connect to multiple Femto Gateways, ready for the introduction of a 3GPP standardised interface. We are delighted to be working with T-Mobile and Huawei to demonstrate the huge potential of femtocell interoperability.’
