ZTE bags WiMAX network construction deal from Iberbanda

11 Dec 2009

Chinese vendor ZTE has reportedly been selected by Spanish WiMAX operator Iberbanda, a subsidiary of fixed line incumbent Telefonica de Espana, for the construction of a WiMAX network. According to Trading Markets, however, it is unclear when and where the project will start, although it is understood that the order is bigger than any other won by ZTE from a Western European telecoms operator, in terms of contractual value.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, in May 2009 Iberbanda selected Israel’s Alvarion to expand its WiMAX network in Catalonia, with the expansion undertaken following the successful bid by the operator to provide WiMAX services to the Catalonian government. Under the contract Iberbanda expects to double its broadband capacity in all four of Catalonia’s provinces; Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona.
