US cable operator Cox Communications has launched trial mobile broadband and voice services over its own cellular infrastructure in three cities: Hampton Roads, Virginia; Omaha, Nebraska; and Orange County, California. The company says it will expand the service across several areas in 2010. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in March 2009 Cox contracted Huawei for a 3G network rollout based on a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO 700MHz platform, including the Chinese vendor’s LTE-ready SingleRAN solution and 3900 Series base stations. An upgrade to ‘4G’ LTE service is mooted for late 2010. Cox also has an agreement with Sprint Nextel to provide mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services over the latter’s nationwide EV-DO-based network. The cableco is aiming to expand its range of multi-service bundles by offering converged quad-play fixed/wireless packages.
