Azerfon plans full 3G coverage of Baku underground

Azeri mobile operator Azerfon, which provides services under the Nar Mobile banner, has revealed plans to provide full 3G network coverage of the Baku underground next year, Azerbaijan Business Center reports. ‘We have plans for full coverage by our network both in the underground and in co-operation with other operators…Currently our network exists partly in metro stations, and external units nearby the underground are used,’ stated Serge Arbogast, Azerfon’s 3G project manager. Arbogast also revealed that the cellco has made third-generation services available to a few customers with 3G-enabled handsets: ‘We have already launched this technology in a pilot regime and a few of our subscribers who have the telephone devices to receive 3G technology can already use it.’ As reported by CommsUpdate, Azerfon became the country’s first 3G licensee earlier this month after the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies (MCIT) awarded a the cellco a concession for AZN11,000 (USD13,600).
